The Problem: Why Your Brakes Are Squeaking

There are many reasons why your brakes could be squeaking, but some are more common than others:

  • Worn-Down Brake Pads: A brake pad is basically a steel backing attached to some friction-inducing material that makes contact with the rotors as you press your foot down on your brake pedal. If (more like when) this friction-inducing material starts to wear away, the brake isn’t going to be as effective anymore. Because of this, many brakes are actually outfitted with a piece of metal that’s intended to cause a high-pitched squealing sound once the pad is worn down. If this happens, contact us ASAP.
  • Hardened, Crystallized Pads and Rotors: Something else that can go wrong is that your calipers can get stuck, leaving your brake pads partially applied to the rotors. This continuous contact between the rotors and the pads can cause them to glaze over, hardening and crystallizing and losing their stopping power.

  • Busted Anti-Rattle Clips: Anti-rattle clips are another component of your brake pads. Their job is to keep the pad from vibrating or rattling too much when you apply the brakes. However, if they’re broken, this is going to cause a horrible-sounding noise. In that case, you’ll need the right team to replace your clips.
  • No Pad Insulation or Insulation Shims: Well-designed vehicles such as BMW models typically feature insulation shims that are engineered as additional protection against brake squeal. But inferior automotive service technicians sometimes discard these shims after routine brake maintenance! We can make that right.

Other reasons could include incorrect rotor surface cuts (or no surface cuts at all), dirt, poor lubrication, unevenly worn (a.k.a. “warped”) rotors, etc. Our BMW technicians are familiar with all of these conditions.
